What are the SDGs?

The SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) are international goals to resolve global social issues and achieve a sustainable world that were adopted at a United Nations summit in September 2015. They comprise 17 goals and 169 targets.

ELIIY Power is a company that had already been working on the issues of the SDGs since its founding in 2006
As a dedicated manufacturer of storage batteries and electricity storage systems, ELIIY Power has contributed to the realization of a sustainable society through the enhanced penetration of safe, large lithium-ion batteries since its founding in 2006.

Of the 17 goals indicated in the SDGs, ELIIY Power selected six goals that have a deep connection to its business to be tackled on a priority and sustainable basis.

By developing and facilitating the enhanced penetration of large-capacity storage batteries that are essential for renewable energies vulnerable to the effects of natural phenomena, ELIIY Power is a manufacturer that embraces a founding philosophy of contributing to human society.   [Specific Activities]

- We provide hybrid electricity storage systems that are essential for effective power utilization by solar power generating systems to single-family homes and apartment complexes.

  ■Case Study: Stationary Home-Use Electricity Storage Systems for Daiwa House Industry Co., Ltd.

SMA x ECO TOWN Harumidai SMA x ECO TOWN Harumidai   “POWER iE 6” electricity storage systems of ELIIY Power were installed at SMA x ECO TOWN Harumidai, in Osaka Prefecture which aims to become a net zero energy town. The systems were installed in all 65 single-family homes and an assembly facility. Mechanisms for the self-supply of eco-friendly energy under normal conditions were developed, and during a disaster the systems can also be utilized as a backup power supply.

SMA- ECO TOWN Sagamihara - Hikarigaoka Eco Town SMA x ECO TOWN Sagamihara - Hikarigaoka Eco Town   “POWER iE 6” electricity storage systems of ELIIY Power were installed at SMA x ECO TOWN Sagamihara - Hikarigaoka Eco Town in Kanagawa Prefecture, an eco-friendly smart community that integrates homes and commercial facilities, and expands the use of renewable energy. The systems were installed in all 127 single-family homes and are being utilized for a low carbon-type eco town that has introduced advanced environmental equipment across its entire area.

SECUREA Toyota Kakimoto SECUREA Toyota Kakimoto   “POWER iE 6 HYBRID” electricity storage systems of ELIIY Power were installed at SECUREA Toyota Kakimoto in Aichi Prefecture, a smart town that has introduced an electric power interchange between single-family homes through the supply of low voltage electricity. The systems were installed in all 21 single-family homes and are used for “in-district electric power interchange” as a new form of electricity supply and demand at single-family homes and reduces the burden on grid power and achieves the local product and local consumption of power.

Development of Reliable and Sustainable Batteries / Development of Sustainable Electric Power Infrastructure

Goal 9: Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation   [Relevant SDG targets]
9.1 Develop quality, reliable, sustainable and resilient infrastructure, including regional and trans- border infrastructure, to support economic development and human well-being, with a focus on affordable and equitable access for all.
9.4 By 2030 upgrade infrastructure and retrofit industries to make them sustainable, with increased resource use efficiency and greater adoption of clean and environmentally sound technologies and industrial processes, all countries taking action in accordance with their respective capabilities.

We are working to ensure the safety of lithium-ion batteries, which use flammable materials, and develop non-flammable and highly sustainable batteries.

- Development of reliable and sustainable batteries
1. Development of batteries with high levels of safety
  - Current: Extremely safe batteries (do not produce fire or emit smoke containing toxic gases even when punctured with a nail or overcharged)
  - Goal: Achieving non-flammable batteries (development of batteries that use nonflammable liquid as the electrolyte)
2. Development of long-life batteries and improved sustainability
ELIIY Power aims to extend the maximum cycles to maintain capacity retention rate 80%
  - Present:           more than 80% after 12,000 cycles (more than 70% after 17,000 cycles)*
  - FY2025 target: more than 80% after 15,000 cycles
  - FY2030 target: more than 80% after 20,000 cycles
   * Battery cell type: PD50S06
This is an estimated service hour of the battery cell at room temperature (25℃), charging current 48.5A (1C), 3 cycles/day (DOD=100%). The capacity retention of the battery cells may change depending on the usage condition of the energy storage system (e.g. frequency of charging/discharging, operating environment, etc.). The actual electrical capacity of the energy storage system may differ from the total electrical capacity of the battery cells built into the system because of the system usage condition.

We aim to build a clean, eco-friendly and self-sufficient energy supply system that utilizes renewable energy allowing local production and local consumption at small scales that do not rely on large and aging infrastructure.

  ■Case Study: Industrial Storage Battery Units for Daiwa House Industry Co., Ltd.

Daiwa House Saga Building Eco-Friendly Office: Daiwa House Saga Building   Storage battery units from ELIIY Power were installed at Daiwa House Saga Building in Saga Prefecture, an office building that introduced a self-sufficient electrical power system to realize twice the energy efficiency (EP100) and 100% renewable energy (RE100). The building was adopted under the 2017 Net Zero Energy Building Demonstration Project implemented by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. Demonstration testing is being conducted as the first renewable energy-based self-sufficient office in Japan, and storage battery units from ELIIY Power are being used as part of the endeavor.

Creating a Safe and Secure Society

To deal with extended period power outages occurring due to frequently occurring natural disasters in Japan such as earthquakes and typhoons, ELIIY Power provides portable electricity storage systems that are ease to install. These systems are utilized to ensure the safety of residents and employees, and as BCP measures.

Establishing Collection and Processing Systems to Enable the Recycling of Lithium-Ion Batteries

12.4 By 2020, achieve the environmentally sound management of chemicals and all wastes throughout their life cycle, in accordance with agreed international frameworks, and significantly reduce their release to air, water and soil in order to minimize their adverse impacts on human health and the environment.

We are establishing a scheme that incorporates the collection, safe processing and recycling of lithium-ion batteries circulating in the market.   [Specific Activities]

- Establishing collection and processing system to enable recycling
Since its founding, ELIIY Power has had its sights set on the establishment of a recycling system. In July 2013, we were the first in the lithium-ion battery industry to obtain certification for wide-area collection and transport of general and industrial waste from the Ministry of the Environment, Government of Japan, allowing us to collect and process electricity storage systems nationwide (excluding Okinawa) over a wide area.
The disassembly and recycling process of lithium-ion batteries requires expert knowledge. Based on this certification, ELIIY Power carries out these tasks in a safe and environmentally friendly way. As all of the waste materials and components extracted from battery cells are recycled into steel, copper, aluminum, plastics and so on, this process does not involve landfill disposal.

Resource Procurement That Considers Labor and Human Rights Issues

ELIIY Power takes care to ensure that the appropriateness of work environments is maintained and that employees are not forced to engage in unreasonable labor in the series of steps related to the manufacturing process. We also ensure the ethical procurement.   [Specific Activities]

To address labor and human rights issues, since our founding we have made efforts to avoid using minerals (cobalt, etc.) at which issues with the labor environment during mining work have been indicated.
